Respecting Kilkenny's Past
The National Appeals Board (An Bord Pleanála) has refused planning permission for the development of a mosque and Islamic cultural centre in Kilkenny city.
The proposed development included a mosque complete with dome and minaret, adjacent living quarters, guest accommodation, classrooms, a café and a halal shop.
The proposal was granted planning permission last year by Kilkenny County Council but a number of appeals were subsequently lodged. A decision was finally made this week to overturn the council's initial grant.
An Bord Pleanála said the plans “would not make a positive contribution to the architectural and cultural heritage of Kilkenny city”.[1]
The news was greeted with joy and relief by campaigners, many of whom had given months of their time to opposing the plans.
Mr Eugene McGuinness, a brother of Fianna Fáil TD John McGuinness, said he was “absolutely delighted” with the decision.[2]
Kilkenny boasts some of the most beautiful medieval Christian sites in Ireland.
Buildings such as the 13th century cathedral of St. Canice and the Dominican Black Abbey stand witness to the city's long Catholic history.
